Not only have the Friends been on hand for cups of tea, sandwiches and cakes, they have also raised a substantial amount of money to support the hospital and its care for patients over the years. Their last gesture was to contribute a large sum to Raise (the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s charity) to support the purchase of a new scanner that will sit at the heart of a new interventional radiology suite, helping to transform surgery for patients.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said: “It was a real honour to join the League of Friends on their last day. I can’t think of more worthy recipients of the first Watford Centenary Heroes awards.

“Many of us will associate the League with really important times in our lives and won’t remember a time when they were not there. They have made a real difference to so many parts of the hospital through the money they have raised and they will be missed.”

The Watford Centenary Heroes is part of the town’s year-long celebrations to mark receiving its borough status by Royal Charter in 1922. The Heroes is a way to recognise the positive contributions made by people and organisations in the town and will be part of the centenary legacy for future generations of Watfordonians to look back on the town as we are in 2022. If you would like to nominate anyone or a group as a Watford Hero visit our Get Involved page where you can also find other plans for the centenary.
